Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn, Twitter, Yammer… the list goes on and on. And on. It seems we’re all fascinated by what our friends and family are up to.
Maybe we're being a bit nosey, maybe we're looking to meet new people, maybe we're just looking to keep in touch with people. Some businesses are even getting social media savvy and seeing the benefits of being able to connect to, potentially, millions of people.
I think being part of the 'conversations' on these websites can be a really powerful tool for businesses. Having a (growing) number of 'fans' can help raise a company's profile.
The more fans a company has the more trustworthy it may seem, especially to someone who is researching that company along with its competitors. It's also a great way to build up a customer base and keep them all informed of any news from your business.

Mashable.com has a huge list of social networking sites. You don't have to go through every single one - the most popular ones are obvious - but just as with the boom of video sites in the last few years, the amount of social networking sites on offer shows just how popular it is.
