<title>A Guide To Protecting Ideas!</title>
 <link>http://www.sonaweb.co.uk/blog/63?task=view#josc6</link>
<description>Ideas are pretty hard to protect, as they are usually stored between a set of ears and kept there until that Eureka moment where you wish to profit from them! In that case you need to decide which category they fall into:

1. Patent - for an invention
2. Trademark - for a logo design or unique identity
3. Copyright - for written text and artistic work
4. Designs for product appearance.

Now, once you have decided which category it fits into, you need to check to see if anyone has it! The UK Intellectual Property has a database where you can search for trademarks, designs and patents, it can also be accessed from the Business Link website, which has a very handy checker http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/cntc?r.lc=en

Obviously copyright is your own work so you can\'t check for that! But for the others, you can apply to protect your invention, design or identity through the UK Intellectual Property Office - www.ipo.gov.uk

Right, a few hints an tips!

Consider carefully the commercial value of what you are offering, it can cost a lot of money protecting, patenting and registering the idea so decide first whether its worth the hassle!

Ensure that once you have protected the idea, you display the appropriate symbols to ensure that people are aware of its protection

If you believe it has considerable commercial value, then it maybe worth taking out insurance to protect against any legal claims you may need to make in case of any breaches!

Thats it for now my fellow dudes, ladies and those who are yet to decide!</description>
